National Board Update RE: Anti-Sexual Violence

Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. does not condone any form of sexual violence, misconduct or harassment towards anyone. Sexual violence can include but are not limited to physical abuse, mental/verbal abuse, and sexual and gender-based violence. As an organization founded to empower other womxn as well as members of the community, we stand in solidarity with the brave survivors who have shared their stories. We care about you, and have always been here to serve and support you. We will continue to work towards listening, supporting, and educating our members.

We stand in solidarity with our Sisters and hope to provide guidance and support during this time. We will continue to advocate and support for structural and cultural changes across the Asian Greek community and organizations, but we also recognize that it includes evaluating our own internal procedures and ability to provide resources to our Sisters. While this is still a work in progress, we are working tirelessly to implement actionable items that will commit to the safety and integrity of our members.

As a sorority, we have committed to the following initiatives  in order to better support, educate, and listen to our Sisters:

  1. The establishment of a diversity, equity, and inclusion task force, which will include a new initiative to provide education and programming focused on interpersonal violence, sexual harassment, and sexual assault. This initiative, called the LaRok Initiative, is being created by Sisters and professionals in the field. This task force is dedicated in honor of our fallen Sister, Sunny Kim *LaRok* from Upsilon Associate Chapter. 
  2. The use of a survey to listen to what our sisters need from the sorority and gain any comments, questions or feedback, which will help better direct our efforts. We will keep the survey open as we implement initiatives to obtain continuous feedback in the future.
  3. A resource guide focused on education and available options for reporting, support, and the roles different entities play in sexual violence allegations including but not limited to local law enforcement, university administration, and an organization’s National Board.
  4. A full review and revision of our current national procedures and policies to have fair and thorough processes when handling allegations of sexual violence and member accountability.
  5. The full cooperation of the National Board in all Title IX related investigations.
  6. Collaborating and discussing with the NAPA Board as well as fellow member organizations about best practices and other relevant resources to further educate, support, and commit to the safety of our Sisters.
  7. The immediate inclusion and implementation of Anti-Sexual Violence education into our upcoming national programming including workshops and a national town hall hosted and led by our own Sisters, who are experts in this field, at our August National Conference. We are further committed to incorporating long-term measures to continue the inclusion of this curriculum at national conferences, new member education programming, Chapter/Associate Chapters operations, and the organization as a whole.
  8. Re-adjust the sorority national budget in order to allocate funds for educational programming like trainings and workshops focused directly on anti-sexual violence and allyship.

We encourage everyone to support survivors, educate themselves, and those in their community on the existence of sexual violence in our society and the importance of ending this sort of violence against anyone. The resources below are valuable organizations that provide a wide variety of educational tools, confidential survivor support, and overall advocacy for the end of sexual violence in our society.

  1. National Sexual Assault Hotline at RAINN is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization which has a free, confidential, 24/7 National Sexual Assault Hotline. This hotline can be reached at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).
  2. National Sexual Violence Resource Center addresses the causes and impact of sexual violence through collaboration, prevention, and resources to leadership.
  3. National Asian Pacific Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) is a community based non-profit organization to build power for APIDA women and girls using a reproductive justice framework.
  4. End Rape on Campus is survivor advocacy organization dedicated to ending sexual violence through survivor support, public education, and policy.
  5. National Domestic Violence Hotline is a 24-hour confidential service for survivors, victims and those affected by domestic violence, intimate partner violence and relationship abuse. This hotline can be reached at 1-800-799-7233.
  6. Loveisrespect is a project developed under the National Domestic Violence Hotline to engage, educate and empower young people to prevent and end abusive relationships.
